The History of The Starter In the past, people tried many things and apparatus just to start prehistoric engines of vehicles. Early methods involved the use of gun powders to pump the cylinders. The other method used wind up springs. People also used cranks to start the engines. Airplanes and other similar vehicles were able to start using cranks.
The very first method that was used to start vehicle engines was the hand crank. However, people later found out that cranks were difficult to pull. Sometimes, it placed users in danger especially those who are inexperienced with hand cranks. An engine does not always have predictable behavior when it is being started. Some individuals were injured because of crank engines. The injury was due to the engine’s sudden reversal movement which caused the cranks to kick. Some manual motor starters once included a slip that went in one direction. This allowed the starter to be released from the engine once it was started. However, if the engine decided to kickback, the starter would still be attached to the engine while it was starting. The Different Types Of Starters
There are two different starters that are used on vehicles, the electric starter and the gear reduction starter. Between the two, the electric starter is the widely used. That’s because the electric starter is used in gasoline or diesel engines. Modern starters use either magnet or electric motor current. Both types has relay or solenoid attached to it. Basically, the starter starts the engine by accepting current from the battery. The current then enters the solenoid so the pinion is pushed. The pinion combines with the ring gear. This powers the engine.
Problems may occur when the person does not release the key soon. Also, when there is shortage in power, the solenoid will not be able to disengage.When this happens, the pinion spins alone and not with the drive shaft. This is the main reason why most vehicle manuals instruct drivers to pause for a few seconds after every attempt to crank the vehicle when the engine does not start immediately.
Chrysler is the company that modernized motor starters. It placed advancements to early starters so people will find it convenient to use. In the early 1960s, Chrysler introduced a new type of starter on the market that used a geartrain. This new piece of equipment was installed between the drive shaft of the vehicle and the engine. This mechanism was not entirely new back in the day. However, it was Chrysler that updated the mechanism and mass produced the geartrain for public use.
If motor starters were not invented, people would have hard time using automobiles and other things with engine. If people settled with crank shafts and old mechanisms, accidents and injuries would be prevalent. It is an essential part of a vehicle that is instrumental in correct functioning and operation of the vehicle.
