The History of The Starter Previously, people tried different ways to start vehicle engines. These methods were different to the function of today’s motor starters. Early methods involved the use of gun powders to pump the cylinders. The other method used wind up springs. People also used cranks to start the engines. Airplanes and other similar vehicles were able to start using cranks.

As stated, hand cranks were popular back in the day. These things help start most engines back in the day. However, it was quickly discovered that the method was not only inconvenient; it was also dangerous and complicated. Some engines were difficult to rotate. Some individuals were injured because of crank engines. The injury was due to the engine’s sudden reversal movement which caused the cranks to kick. Other motors were equipped with slips. Slips allow users to pull the starter once the engines started. That’s because the starters can be released during engine startup. But if the engine failed to start, the starter remains attached in the engine. The shaking and jerking had the potential to cause injuries to the operator of the vehicle. VFD

The Different Types Of Starters

There are two different starters that are used on vehicles, the electric starter and the gear reduction starter. The electric starter is the widely used motor starter because this is used in most gasoline engines. The modern version of a motor starter consists of magnets or electric motor current that has a relay or solenoid attached to it. Basically, the starter starts the engine by accepting current from the battery. The current then enters the solenoid so the pinion is pushed. The pinion then combines with the ring gear, powering the engine.

Problems can occur when the driver does not release the key as soon as the engine starts or there is shortage in the system and the solenoid fails to disengage.When one of these scenarios occur, the pinion will spin alone and not with the drive shaft. To avoid worsening the problem, drivers should not attempt to start the vehicle right away. Drivers should wait for a few seconds before restarting the engine.

The Chrysler Corporation is the one that made further advancements to motor starters. Chrysler made a new kind of motor starter for vehicles. It was released in the 60s and was called geartrain. The geartrain is found between the drive shaft and the engine. This concept was not entirely new back in the day but it was Chrysler that perfected the design and mass produced the geartrain.

If motor starters were not invented, people would have hard time using automobiles and other things with engine. If people settled with crank shafts and old mechanisms, accidents and injuries would be prevalent. It is an essential part of a vehicle that is instrumental in correct functioning and operation of the vehicle.
