Contactor: Why A Motor Starter Is Vital And The Different Varieties Of Starters

VFD Guides A motor starter is a device that can be electric, hydraulic or pneumatic in nature. As its name suggests, it helps motors to properly start or stop. This happens when the device regulates the flow of current towards the motor.

The History of The Starter Before the starter as it is known today was invented, many different methods were used to start the engine in vehicles. Early methods involved the use of gun powders to pump the cylinders. The other method used wind up springs. Human methods were also used such as crank handles, pulling on propellers of airplanes and pulling on cords attached to pulleys.

As stated, hand cranks were popular back in the day. These things help start most engines back in the day. But as time went by, people found cranks to be inconvenient and sometimes dangerous. First generation engines were hard to pull. It would take a lot of might just to crank the engines. If the person is weak, the crank would reverse all of a sudden, causing tremendous kick. Other motors were equipped with slips. This allowed users to release the starter once the engine successfully starts. However, the motor starter would not be released if the engine failed to start. It would remain latched into the engine. As a result, the starter shakes and jerks while the engine turns. This caused accidents in the past. http://www.mag-trol.com/

The Different Types Of Starters

There are two different starters that are used on vehicles, the electric starter and the gear reduction starter. Between the two, the electric starter is the widely used. That’s because the electric starter is used in gasoline or diesel engines. Modern starters use either magnet or electric motor current. Both types has relay or solenoid attached to it. A current passes from the battery in the vehicle to the solenoid that pushes out the pinion. The pinion then combines with the ring gear so the engine can start.

Problems can occur with the pinion when either the driver does not release the key soon after the engine has started, or there is a shortage somewhere in the system and the solenoid is not able to become disengaged. When this happens, the pinion spins alone and not with the drive shaft. This is the main reason why most vehicle manuals instruct drivers to pause for a few seconds after every attempt to crank the vehicle when the engine does not start immediately.

The Chrysler Corporation is responsible for many of the modern advancements that have been made to the starter. In 1960, Chrysler introduced the geartrain in the market. This new piece of equipment was installed between the drive shaft of the vehicle and the engine. This concept was not entirely new back in the day but it was Chrysler that perfected the design and mass produced the geartrain.

Without motor starters, vehicles would be difficult to start. Thanks to people who perfected the design, it is now easy to use vehicles.
