The History of The Starter In the past, people tried many things and apparatus just to start prehistoric engines of vehicles. In the early days, people used gun powders and springs to start engines. Human methods were also used such as crank handles, pulling on propellers of airplanes and pulling on cords attached to pulleys.

The very first method that was used to start vehicle engines was the hand crank. But as time went by, people found cranks to be inconvenient and sometimes dangerous. Some engines were difficult to rotate. An engine has the ability to kick back, and this causes it to create a reversal movement. Other engines used motor starters which included a slip that went to the opposite direction. Slips allow users to pull the starter once the engines started. That’s because the starters can be released during engine startup. However, the motor starter would not be released if the engine failed to start. It would remain latched into the engine. The Different Types Of Starters

There are two different starters that are used on vehicles, the electric starter and the gear reduction starter. The electric starter is the widely used motor starter because this is used in most gasoline engines. Motor starters today consist of magnetic or electrical motor current that is equipped with a relay or solenoid. The current which is from the battery passes to the solenoid to push out the pinion. The pinion then combines with the ring gear so the engine can start.

Problems can occur when the driver does not release the key as soon as the engine starts or there is shortage in the system and the solenoid fails to disengage.When one of these scenarios occur, the pinion will spin alone and not with the drive shaft. This is the main reason why most vehicle manuals instruct drivers to pause for a few seconds after every attempt to crank the vehicle when the engine does not start immediately.

The Chrysler Corporation is the one that made further advancements to motor starters. Chrysler made a new kind of motor starter for vehicles. It was released in the 60s and was called geartrain. The geartrain is found between the drive shaft and the engine. This concept was not entirely new back in the day but it was Chrysler that perfected the design and mass produced the geartrain.

If motor starters were not invented, people would have hard time using automobiles and other things with engine. If people settled with crank shafts and old mechanisms, accidents and injuries would be prevalent. Thanks to people who perfected the design, it is now easy to use vehicles.
