Other motors were equipped with slips. This allowed the starter to be released from the engine once it was started. But if the engine failed to start, the starter remains attached in the engine. The Different Types Of Starters

Today, modern starters are used in most vehicles and these are the electric starter and the other one is the gear reduction starter. Between the two, the electric starter is the widely used. That’s because the electric starter is used in gasoline or diesel engines. The modern version of a motor starter consists of magnets or electric motor current that has a relay or solenoid attached to it. A current passes from the battery in the vehicle to the solenoid that pushes out the pinion. The pinion then combines with the ring gear so the engine can start.

Problems can occur when the driver does not release the key as soon as the engine starts or there is shortage in the system and the solenoid fails to disengage. When this happens, the pinion will spin on its own and not with the drive shaft. This is the main reason why most vehicle manuals instruct drivers to pause for a few seconds after every attempt to crank the vehicle when the engine does not start immediately.

The Chrysler Corporation is responsible for many of the modern advancements that have been made to the starter. Chrysler made a new kind of motor starter for vehicles. It was released in the 60s and was called geartrain. This new piece of equipment was installed between the drive shaft of the vehicle and the engine. Even though other manufacturers had produced starters with similar concepts before the 1960s, Chrysler was the first auto maker to create volumes of the unit.

Without motor starters, vehicles would be difficult to start. It is an essential part of a vehicle that is instrumental in correct functioning and operation of the vehicle.
